Some of the wealthiest owners in English football - including Mike Ashley of Newcastle and Joe Lewis at Spurs - have earned criticism for relying on taxpayer handouts to help pay the wages of their non-playing staff during the enforced Coronavirus lay-off. Liverpool also planned to use the UK government's furlough scheme, but have since u-turned following an outcry from their fans.
