There’s some great content for you this week on the WTMG podcast. Along with my co-host, former Charlton Athletic and Sunderland director Charlie Methven, we look at two huge stories from the world of football.
Firstly, could the established 'Big Six’ of English football be be about to lose their stranglehold on the top slots?
Since the inception of the Premier League, half a dozen teams - the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs - have dominated the league title and Champions League qualification.
Although Liverpool will no doubt still win the title this season, there’s evidence of a ‘new guard’ advancing towards the top.
As Manchester United, Chelsea and Spurs all struggle, could Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth be about to smash the ‘cartel’?
It’s a different story at the bottom of the table, where the same old faces seem to keep swapping places with an elite of Championship clubs who are cushioned by parachute payments, but seem unable to consolidate a place in the top flight.
We also explore the ongoing crisis at Catalan giants Barcelona, who are currently fielding two players regarded as ineligible by La Liga, because of overspending.
Remarkably, the Spanish National Sports Council - an arm of the government - has intervened to back Barca.
Happy listening.
